Late 17th set of six century backstools
A true set of six South Yorkshire backstools of a seldom seen variety, having two arched back rails, covered with an S shape carved design around a scalloped and punched lower arch. The chairs are further embellished with split turnings, finials, and drops. I believe these backstools are from the period late on in the evolution of the backstool to chair as it is quite elegant when compared to earlier models but still of a good character and tactility.
N.B. The S shaped carving is also seen on the Close stool of the same period.
