SOLD: Early Oak Chest - 15th Century Carved Oak Boarded Chest Circa 1480
An English boarded oak chest in superb condition.
The front is
decorated with whorls and perpendicular tracery. Allowance has been made
in the design for the lock plate to fit above two gothic leaves.
Although the lock plate is contemporary with the chest, I suspect it is not original.
late 15th century chest such as this is one of the earliest pieces of
English furniture that a collector can hope to possess and since so few
exist, rarely do they come on the market.
This chest has a good colour and patina with an excellent provenance and overall integrity.
A previous owner of this chest purchased it from Mary Bellis who acquired it from the collection of William Randolph Hearst.
Also featured in The Antique Collector Magazine, Aug 1970.
